This exclusive offering to OTOA members will provide all of the basics needed to validate the need for an RDS handgun system and familiarize the officer with the basic practical applications through live-fire exercises.

The Red Dot Foundations – Education for an Officer / Deputy or agency will include the following:

  • RDS Handgun History
  • Identifying the need for RDS
  • Testing and Evaluation for LE purposes
  • Choosing the RDS – industry options
  • Writing a requirements document to support a program for your Agency
  • Procurement and implementation of gear, training and records
  • Mounting advantages and disadvantages
  • The applications portion (live fire) will include the following:
  • Safety
  • Presentations
  • Sight picture; The HUGE advantage for Law Enforcement
  • “Tracking”
  • Fundamentals with the RDS
  • Advantages for the Instructor, trickle down for recruits / students
  • Reloads
  • Clearing malfunctions using the RDS
  • The red dot sight without the dot – optic malfunction techniques
  • Iron sight considerations
  • Multiple threats / threat selection / tracking
  • Movement while shooting
  • Disabled / one handed techniques
  • Using barricades with RDS pistols
  • Lesson plans

Required Equipment – Student Supplied:

  • Student needs to bring a belt for the holster and mag carrier, 1.5 to 1.75 inch belts
  • 800 rounds of factory 9mm pistol ammunition – NO RELOADS
  • Range appropriate attire
  • Wrap around Eye Protection
  • Ear protection (electronic preferred)
  • Baseball style hat / billed cap
  • Food / WATER
  • Seasonal weather gear / rain gear
  • Note taking material

Pistols: GLOCK pistol + 3 magazines w/ RDS

Holsters: Safariland, Raven Concealment Systems, Zero9 Solutions

Magazine Carrier: Zero9 Solutions

Spare batteries for optics supplied by OTOA

Matt has been involved with agencies and shooting red dot sights on handguns since 2005 where he was the Senior Assault Weapons
Program Manager at FNHUSA. He was co-Manager of the Joint Combat Pistol Program (JCP) for the U.S. Air Force where the first production handgun was introduced to the market, the
FNP45T.

Matt has worked with several handgun and optics companies in the development and fielding of RDS on handguns with his current company clients and several Law Enforcement agencies.

Matt recently was retained by ATEi of Taylor, Michigan as the Director of Law Enforcement Programs and business development based on his experience within the industry in the red dot sight field.

OTOA supplies the RDS pistols for this course. If you bring your own - Only Glock RDS pistols allowed for course. If you bring your own Glock pistol, an approved RDS system MUST be installed BEFORE day one of the class you register for.
